The basic action is a group of between 3 and 70 people sail together on a ship, and fight other ships, first with a sea battle, followed by a boarding fight (usually with swords, occasionally with "bludgeons"). How do ships manuver and fight? Well, there are three basic operations: Carpentry, to keep the leaks fixed; bilge pumping, to keep the water out and the ship dry; and sails, to keep the ship moving. Each person on the ship helps out by manning a station, where they play simple puzzle games (similar to, but not the same as, bejeweled, pentaminoes, or Dr. Mario). Additionally, there is a game for loading guns, and the ship's navigator steers the ship and fires the guns. Sword fighting is very similar to a team version of puzzle fighter. Bludgeon fights are like the "Pop groups of three" bubble games.

There are two types of servers: One type is the standard pay-per-month subscription server.
The other type, called "Doubloon servers", use a micropayment token system. Instead of spending $10/month for anything, most items require a payment of anywhere from 2 to 10 tokens (called "Doubloons"); tokens can either be purchased for cash (this is how the company makes money), or from other players. As a rule of thumb, two hours of play will earn enough to purchase three of these tokens from other players (the exact cost varies on a player driven exchange market). It is possible to play without ever spending any of these tokens; you'll be able to play the basic games (but you cannot navigate a ship), and you'll have access to the most basic of swords and bludgeons. While sufficient to defeat NPC's, it will be insufficient to defeat other players.
